Zion Kids Milestone Events
3 years- Welcome to Sunday School
Starting Sunday School with all of our kids can be overwhelming for our youngest kids. The Sunday before Rally Day, our 3 year olds who have never been to Sunday School have a special Sunday just for them and their parents. Together with their families, they familiarize themselves with the room and routine, learn songs, have a lesson, and make a craft.
4 years- Discovering Worship
Worshiping in God’s house is not just for big people! Our youngest members can be a part of the Divine Service too! All the sights, sounds, and smells in God’s house remind us of Jesus and his love. During this milestone, our 4 year olds and their families discover worship by smelling the wine, touching the stained glass, praying on the kneeler, playing songs on the piano. The also receive the book, Whisper Whisper, Learning about Church.
Kindergarten- Starting School
Receive Beginner’s Bible
Starting school is a big transition! It’s important to remember during new and sometimes scary times, God is always with us. During this milestone, our new kindergartners receive an easy reader Beginner’s Bible. We read the story of Joshua and talk about how we can always be “strong and courageous because the Lord our God is with us wherever we go” (Joshua 1:9). We sing songs and make a pocket heart with our families that can be hugged and kissed and put in their pockets so they can feel your love at school.
1st Grade- Donuts with the Director
Building relationships with our children is an important part in sharing the value of the most important relationship they will ever have, the one with their Creator and Savior. Each 1st grader gets to have a special breakfast with Chez. They have a devotion, pray together, and just talk, about life, about school, about anything the kids want to share!
2nd Grade- The Gifts of Worship
Throughout their first years as a Zion Kid, we make an effort to include them in worship, valuing their participation in the Divine Service. In 2nd grade we begin to educate them on some of the specific traditions and gifts God offers us during worship. We explore invocation, confession and absolution, the Word and Sacraments, the sermon, and the benediction. During this milestone, our kids make a worship necklace, booklet, and bag. Parents are given a more in depth guide to even more treasures to be discovered during worship.
3rd Grade- What is the Bible?
Receive Faith Alive Bibles
The Sunday after Rally Day, our 3rd graders and their families gather to discover the bible as one story about a Hero who leaves His throne to rescue the ones He loves. Each story and verse in scripture points to Jesus and his redemption story for us. We learn about the difference in the Old and New Testament, look at the books and how they are organized and who wrote them, and begin to dive into the beautiful love story in the Faith Alive Bible which is filled with additions that enhance their reading, help them develop context and apply the God-breathed text. This activity is designed as a treasure hunt complete with treasure boxes, maps, and fun!
4th Grade- Sacred Pathways
The God of this universe decided that the world needed you, and that God wants to spend time with you too. We know that we can connect and communicate with God by reading His Word and praying. But did you know that this doesn’t have to be silent; it doesn’t have to be done quietly in your room. Spending time with God can look creative, intellectual, even loud. He made you unique and wants to spend time with you in ways that are unique to you.
5th Grade- First Communion
First Youth Night
Our 5th graders take a class focusing on the gifts we receive during Holy Communion, and when they finish get to take the Lord’s Supper for the first time! This year they are also invited to youth night for the first time as they transition from Zion Kids to Zion Youth!
